BANDON PLAYHOUSE SEEKS NEW MEMBERS

Join us for our Annual Membership Meeting on Oct. 13!
BANDON — Despite theater shut-downs due to the pandemic, Bandon Playhouse has survived and even thrived over the past two years. Now the nonprofit organization that has been operating continuously since 1972 needs the community’s support more than ever.

Per its bylaws, Bandon Playhouse will hold its annual membership meeting, which includes election of board members for the coming year at 6 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 13, in the lobby of the Sprague Theater, 1202 11th St. SW, in Bandon City Park. Current members and new members are eligible for board positions.

During the entire pandemic, the Playhouse met monthly via Zoom and even produced a video for its YouTube channel, “Bandon Burns,” based on the devastating fire of 1936.

This year, Playhouse is again meeting in person on the second Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. at the Sprague Theater. Anyone interested is welcome to attend.

Also this year, Playhouse hosted an interactive theater open house as well as a theater bootcamp workshop (“Come Play with Bandon Playhouse”) and is in production for its upcoming show: Variety By-the-Sea featuring “Folly of the Lighthouse Keeper’s Daughter” to be performed Nov. 18, 19 and 20 at the Sprague Theater.

“We’ve had so much support from the community but we need more volunteers who are willing to step up and serve on our Board of Directors,” said Playhouse president Amy Moss Strong. “We’ve managed to stay together and there’s nowhere to go but up from here. We hope to present a 2023 theater season that will appeal to all Bandon audiences.”

“We feel Playhouse is still vital to our community and provides opportunities for people of all ages to explore their creative sides,” Moss Strong added. “Whether on the stage or behind it, there’s a place for everyone to shine at the theater.”

The new board will help the Playhouse finalize its 2023 season selections, plus broaden its successful education program. Anyone interested in being nominated for a board position can call Moss Strong at 541-290-9989 to be put on the ballot, or show up at the meeting.
Nominations also can be taken from the floor at the annual membership meeting.

Board appointments run from January through December. Current board members in addition to Moss Strong include past-president Neal Davis, board members Corrie Gant, Annie Ohlsen and Jen Marcotte.

Bandon Playhouse Auditions for By-the-Sea Variety

Come play with Bandon Playhouse in our first post-pandemic production! Performers and crew are wanted for the Bandon Playhouse production By-the-Sea Variety, featuring “Folly of the Lighthouse Keeper’s Daughter.” Auditions are Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 27 and 28, starting at 6 p.m. at the Sprague Community Theater, 1202 11th St. SW in Bandon. Parts are available for crew and performers– actors, singers and dancers age 12 and older. Performance dates are set for Nov. 18, 19 and 20, 2022. For those who can’t make those audition dates, please contact us at 541-290-9989 or by email at TheBandonPlayhouse@gmail.com to make other arrangements.

“Folly of the Lighthouse Keeper’s Daughter” is a classically comedic melodrama written by Corrie Gant. Lark Sparky, the lighthouse keeper’s daughter, dreams of a life of adventure. Will she embrace the affection of local dairyman Clark Barker, or fall for the suave but shady investor, Lester Holstein? The melodramatic cast also includes Minnie Myrtle Morrison, a keen eyed poetess and owner of the Dusty Crab Saloon; crafty real estate broker Rosa DeRhodes; and Otis Sparky, the kindly and often tipsy lighthouse keeper.

“By-the-Sea Variety,” will feature coastal themed variety acts, such as music and dance, between play scenes. Parts are available for soloists or small groups as well as full ensemble pieces. The production team has a list of options for coast, ocean and river themed tunes. And performers are invited to suggest thematic content.

Auditions are set for two evenings. Variety ensemble auditions will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 27 with music direction and accompaniment provided for the group. Callbacks for soloists and small groups will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 28. Actors interested in auditioning for the melodrama are invited at 7 p.m. on Tuesday or Wednesday. Those interested in joining the production crew, assisting back stage or front of house, are welcome either evening.

“By-the-Sea Variety” performance dates are Nov. 18, 19 and 20. The show is directed by Corrie Gant and Geneva Miller and produced by Amy Moss Strong. Those with questions are welcome to send an email to TheBandonPlayhouse@gmail.com or call Amy Moss Strong at 541-290-9989 and leave a message.

Since 1976, the Bandon Playhouse has provided the best in community theater, from classic musicals to premiere works by new playwrights. News

Some Enchanted Evening was a fantastic success!  Thanks to director Geneva Miller and producer Amy Moss Strong for staging this enjoyable and entertaining sing along. With over 20 incredible performers in the cast and great music by Crystal Landucci, we couldn't have asked for a better show to get Bandon Playhouse back on the stage. There's a lot more to come from the Bandon Playhouse - thank you for your support and interest!

We also had a successful production of "A Bandon Christmas Carol," in Dec. 2019, produced and written by Playhouse board member and local playwright Neal Davis.

Unfortunately, we were not able to produce any shows in 2020 or 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but we are working on some exciting projects for 2022. Join our mailing list for updates!

Read about our new direction & goals in an article from early 2019 in the Bandon Western World article here!
